What Does a Chiropractor Actually Do?

I hear this question all the time, especially from people who have only seen short clips online. The truth is, chiropractic care today looks very different from the outdated image people may have from years ago. In my San Juan Capistrano practice I blend gentle adjustments with muscle work, movement training, breath coaching, and personalized education so patients understand why their bodies feel the way they do.
When people experience this type of care for the first time they often tell me they had no idea chiropractic could look or feel like this.
Adjustments Are Only One Part of Care
Chiropractic adjustments are simply one of the tools I use. They help restore movement in joints that have become stiff or restricted over time. Most people describe them as gentle, relieving, or surprisingly calming. Adjustments help your body move with more ease and support your nervous system in regulating stress.
I offer both traditional manual adjustments as well as gentle techniques. If you want to learn what this looks like in practice you can explore my page on gentle chiropractic care.
The Role of Muscle Work
Many of my patients arrive with tight hips, overactive lower back muscles, and tension patterns they’ve been carrying for years. Gentle soft tissue work helps calm the nervous system and reduce tension so adjustments last longer. I use a mix of hands-on techniques depending on what your body needs that day.
Breathwork and Deep Core Activation
Most people think they know how to breathe, but almost everyone I meet is breathing with their shoulders without realizing it. Breathwork is one of the fastest ways to calm pain signals because it helps the diaphragm and deep core activate correctly.
I had a patient not long ago who told me she always felt “locked up” in her low back after sitting. Once we corrected her breathing mechanics she noticed her pain decreasing throughout the day, not just after appointments.
Movement Training and Stability Work
I help people retrain their bodies to move in healthier patterns. This may include hip hinging, gentle core sequencing, mobility drills, or stability exercises that are tailored to your specific pain pattern. These small changes help you build strength and stability so pain stops returning.
Education You Can Actually Use
One of the things patients appreciate most is understanding their own bodies. When you finally know why something hurts it becomes easier to work with your body instead of against it. My goal is to give you tools you can use at home so each visit builds on your progress.
When to Consider Chiropractic Care
If you feel stiff in the morning, if your pain comes back every time you sit, if stretching only helps for a few minutes, or if you simply want clarity about what your body is doing, chiropractic care can help you get answers.

When the Trails Close: Where to Walk When South OC Gets Rainy
We had plans to hike Top of the World in Laguna Beach last weekend. The weather looked perfect. And then we got to the trailhead and saw the closure signs. Turns out most of Orange County's dirt trails close after rain to prevent erosion. Makes sense when you...
